this sh*ts been debunked but it still gets spread
You morons who get excited to post this are some of the dumbest people in the threads. You're not educating anyone or making a point. People recommend master because it's fun, not because of your imaginary "people think it makes enemies die faster" strawman argument.

Play using the hardest difficulty, it affects accuracy and damage. If you play medium or easy the enemies become bullet sponges.
Wrong. This has been debunked for over a decade. The player does more damage on lower difficulties and receives frequent & better quality loot.

Play it vanilla. Mods make it far better than vanilla is, but they always break balance to some degree and influence game mechanics in jankiest ways (as if base game wasn't janky enough). Once you do that, feel free to try out mods, there's tons of good stuff out there.
It's an old game and it shows, but hopefully you'll enjoy it regardless.

Consult this Starting Guide,
then see the /vg/'s huge Stalker General for more tips and links:[...]
[...]
Play in the release order.
Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first;
these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete", "Anomaly" and "Gamma" mega-mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere. And disable crosshair. it's just in your way and may enable bad habbits (namely hip firing).Don't give up in the beginning!
The starting gear sucks ass (on purpose) and first area can be a bit boring to some folks that're used to faster paced games.- Anonymous

Like said many times, latest patch is all ya NEED, and both GOG and Steam provide that automatically. Many people do recommend the ZRP mod, essentially a fan-patch of sorts, as a good to have secondary, but you really don't need it necessarily, per se.
Just make sure you toggle on the DirectX9 full dynamic lighting mode so it looks like a late-00s game instead of Y2K era title, disable the crosshair to avoid bad gaming habits (ie. shooting full auto from a hip), and play on the highest difficulty.
If you have never ever played a proper PC FPS or CRPG title before (and no, any CoD or BF made after 2004 does not count), you may have a steep learning curve. Just understand that there's bullet physics, you are not a superhuman, hoarding sh*t like a bag-rat will get you into trouble eventually, and the world keeps spinning even without your input.
Analmeme is absolutely sh*t, and not even the first nor the second free-roam sandbox mod for STALKER. That sh*t got tiresome already back in 2011.

Eh. I like Anomaly a lot and play it a lot, although I definitely appreciate the adjustable difficulty. Base settings are much too grindy for my tastes. Also too much of the difficulty comes not from gunplay and progression but for it being really hard to spot enemies. The normal games have fairly visible silhouettes. I would consider Call of Pripyat to be the pinnacle of the art form as far as Stalker is concerned, although I know a lot of people don't like it's gameplay departures from the "traditional formula" established in Shadow of Chernobyl, which Anomaly more closely follows.

Master difficulty is clearly the way the games were developed to be played at, the other difficulties were only added later after they were bailed out by a western publisher and the guy they sent over mandated that the game HAD to have difficulty options "just because.".

ZRP is pretty much a requirement. Artifact respawning and random crate items are broken in vanilla, and you also get a good deal of engrish like 'the stash is located in the basem*nt of the house' (it's actually in the attic). The localization leaves much to be desired. It's also got a few good optional quality of life fixes that some people enjoy, such as removing the looping nightvision sound whenever you enable your nightvision (this can get annoying quickly) and removing the radiation white-out effect where the screen gets whiter and whiter as you enter an irradiated area (this makes the final levels of the game quite tedious).

Yes.
Zone reclamation project.
That is all you need for a fist playthrough. It's just a polished up version of the vanilla game, 99% of changes are purely techical fixes, the one gameplay element that it adds is a sleeping bag, which was supposed to be in the base game anyway, and saves you a lot of tedium.
That is it.

It's a survival horror game, which I think is a meaningful difference. The scares in Stalker come from the tension of having low supplies, the threat of losing progress, and the atmosphere, rather from the monsters being inherently scary or whatever. At least I haven't found bloodsuckers scary since I was 14. It's more like say, the old Resident Evils in that regard. Sure the zombie mansion in RE1 is spooky, but if you could mow through hordes like Leon in RE4 then it'd be as horrifying as a children's ghost train.
- Anonymous

>from the tension of having low supplies
which literally does not exist since the game showers you with far more bullets and food than you'll ever need>the threat of losing progress,
*quicksaves on your grave*>rather from the monsters being inherently scary
The only parts of STALKER that even begin to approach "horror game" territory are in the lab sections with all the invisible poltergeists and the sound of pseudogiants lumbering the dark several rooms over - Anonymous

Just finished a master playthrough and I don’t think I ever struggled with ammo past the Garbage tbh.
You get a boatload of free bullets at the car park and from then on as long as you unload every gun you pick up you should have no trouble progressing to something better than a Viper 5. Also had so much money from selling artifacts, doing jobs, and the arena that I could just freely buy as much ammo as I needed by the halfway point. - Anonymous

Even on master you'll still end up overencumbered with supplies because of all the dumbass shootout sections like Agropom and the Dark Valley. They're full of human enemies that are basically supply pinatas. A lot of people sh*t talk CoP for some reason but it made most of the enemies mutants, which is fundamentally just much better for making the survival sh*t matter, and yet EVEN STILL with CoP, the survival sh*t is still a joke in that game

Honestly, yeah, I agree. Once you figure the game out, it's not hard, therefore there's no tension, therefore no horror. The last time I played through Shadow of Chernobyl I went into Pripyat with more than 10kg of medkits and bandages. But for a new player this isn't the case.

Eh, any game can have you apprehensive about what's coming up next. But there's just so many bodies to loot even in the early game that I just wasn't ever afraid on my first playthough. The big thing repeat playthroughs taught me was the location of suits you can get for free to trivialize things even more, like the hidden merc suit in the starter village
