However, to the disappointment of many PC gamers, the remaster will not be available on Steam, potentially missing a significant portion of the audience on the platform that remains the broadest digital distribution service for PC gaming. Although Argonaut has not revealed Croc: Legend of the Gobbos official release date, they teased that it is “coming soon.”

For those unfamiliar with Argonaut Games, the developer behind the original Croc and this remaster, it is a name familiar to gaming enthusiasts. Known for its pioneering work on the Super FX chip that powered Star Fox on the SNES, Argonaut Games made a mark in the early 3D gaming space. Croc was one of the studio’s biggest hits, selling over 3 million copies worldwide. Though Argonaut Games closed in 2004, the company has returned with Jez San, the founder, leading the charge. The remaster of Croc marks Argonaut’s first massive return to the industry.

Initially launched in 1997 for the PlayStation, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos quickly captured gamers’ hearts with its charming, family-friendly platforming and adorable protagonist, a baby crocodile named Croc. In the game, Croc sets off on a mission to save his friends, the Gobbos, from the clutches of the evil Baron Dante.

Following, the game’s appeal led to successful releases on Sega Saturn and PC, spawning a sequel and a Game Boy Color spin-off. Croc holds a lasting memory among PlayStation platformers, standing alongside memorable icons like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Gex as one of the 3D platformers defining the console’s golden age.

Thus, the upcoming remaster aims to capture the original’s magic while bringing it to new audiences with modern enhancements. With this release, Argonaut’s new leadership hopes to rekindle players’ memories of the 90s, delivering updated HD graphics, smoother modern controls, and an immersive experience that still preserves the original charm.

In Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, players control Croc, a small and humble crocodile raised by a tribe of furry creatures known as Gobbos. When the evil Baron Dante and his minions, the Dantinis, invade Gobbo Island, capturing all of Croc’s friends, the brave little reptile sets off on a platforming adventure to rescue them.

Croc’s journey will take him through five expansive worlds, each filled with unique levels, enemies, and boss fights. Players must help Croc run, jump, swim, climb, and tail-spin through 40+ levels, each packed with hidden areas and challenges.

Gameplay Mechanics and Modern Enhancements

Like many retro games, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos follows the traditional platforming formula, with Croc navigating various 3D environments while collecting Gobbos and crystals and tackling puzzles. The remaster retains the core gameplay elements but adds new enhancements:

  • Fluid Movement: While the original game featured tank controls, the remaster will offer a more fluid, analogue-based control scheme.
  • Unique Worlds: Each of the five worlds offers a distinct aesthetic, ranging from volcanic islands to ice-covered glaciers and underwater caves.
  • Varied Boss Fights: Bosses, including Baron Dante, offer memorable and challenging encounters.

While the essence of the original Croc remains, the Croc: Legend of the Gobbos remaster includes several modern updates that enhance the overall experience:

  • HD Visuals: The remaster boasts high-definition graphics, showcasing improved textures and lighting effects.
  • Refined Camera System: One of the major complaints about the original game was the camera. The remaster addresses this issue with a new, more responsive camera system.
  • Accessibility Options: Players can choose between classic controls or modern controls.

Crocipedia Feature

Besides retaining many of the original’s features, the most unique addition to this remaster is the Crocipedia. According to descriptions, it is a digital museum that offers fans a behind-the-scenes look at Croc’s development journey. The Crocipedia contains an array of assets that will immerse players in the game’s creation process.

For example, it includes long-lost design documents, concept art, animation tests, pre-release music, and exclusive interviews with the development team. This feature enriches the gameplay experience and tributes to the team behind Croc.

Lastly, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos will feature Retro Video Modes for those who prefer a more nostalgic touch, with graphical filters to simulate the original 1997 experience.

Closing Notes

Crocs’s revival follows a trend of remastering classic platformers that have resonated well with audiences in recent years. Games like the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy have shown that nostalgia-driven releases can be immensely successful, each selling millions of copies. There’s reason to hope that Croc: Legend of the Gobbos can reach similar levels of success, reigniting memories for longtime fans and introducing its whimsical world to a new generation.

Argonaut Games’ founder, Jez San, expressed his enthusiasm in a recent press release, emphasizing the studio’s dedication to maintaining the game’s essence. “The Croc remaster aims to reignite the imaginations of players with its enhanced HD graphics, updated modern controls, and an authentic gameplay experience that will transport players back to the golden age of gaming,” said San. By embracing the new and the old, Argonaut Games will set the stage for Croc: Legend of the Gobbos to charm both retro and modern gamers.
