The college landscape of the 21st century is beginning to take shape —- and it is drastically different than the higher education system of the late 20th century. From my assessment, the colleges and universities that make significant investments in Graduate and Continuing/Professional Education coupled with the development of a sound student success platform for these unique learners will not only play a key role in the development of the United States of America for a generation, they will also reap a substantial ROI. Multiple career and education pathways need to exist for students in Washington state. In Washington, "nearly 90% of high schoolers say they want to continue their education after high school, but only 50% of high school graduates immediately enroll in a postsecondary program, compared with 63% nationally."We can improve these numbers by offering different education pathways during and after high school, including certificates, apprenticeships, and associate and bachelor's degrees. WSOS offers students many pathways to high-demand careers, including graduate programs, apprenticeships, certificates, and associate and bachelor's degrees. https://lnkd.in/gFJQ3r6D

Skills before degrees! I spent two years researching multiple pathways to rewarding lives that don't require a bachelor's degree. College is great, but it's not for everyone. Others will benefit by delaying college and exploring the world's offerings and what makes them excited to get up in the morning. The distinctions in opportunity and pay between college and high school grads are shrinking, and the options for the latter group are growing massively."Rethinking College: A Guide to Thriving Without a Degree" examines the issue, provides interactive quizzes for young people to figure out what's right for them, and then gives information about the many, many opportunities beyond military and skilled trades that they hear about from school counselors, with specific information about how to enter those fields. There's also a section on innovative four-year colleges that focus on practice and that cost nothing or very little."Rethinking College" will be published in August by HarperCollins, but right now, Barnes & Noble is taking pre-orders and giving a discount of 25% for the next two days, if you have or get a free rewards membership. Reflecting upon my role working for Unibuddy at Queen Mary University of London, I can't help but feel a profound sense of fulfilment 🌟 Supporting aspiring university students across multiple subject areas, and having the privilege of assisting many on their paths to Higher Education has been an enriching experience 🩺 Applying to university is a daunting experience, and as the deadline for Medicine/Dentistry/Oxbridge applications is less than 5 weeks away, here are key tips I have when applying to university:📚Subject - must bring enjoyment! The programme you do is an investment of both your time and finances. Remember this when choosing your subject📜Programme type - whilst degrees are the most common form of programmes at university, there are lots types! Ranging from standard degrees, foundation years, degree apprenticeships, and more. Think about how you what to learn and what kind of experience you hope to gain📑4 or 5 Choices - make them count! There are many things you could consider - learning style, year abroad, year in industry, assessment formats, student satisfaction, location, and more. Identify factors that matter to you, go through your list of possible institutions, and begin narrowing your choices✍🏽Personal statement - it's about you! I went through about 10 versions following feedback from older university students, friends, family, careers department and tutors. Whilst it's helpful to gain feedback, and being under the 4000 character limit, it's more important that the personal statement is reflection of ✨YOU✨📝Reference - make sure your tutor or teacher knows who you are, your interests, any extenuating circ*mstances that may be relevant. The person writing your referee is important as they are your main cheerleader in your application🥳Wishing you all the best as you apply to Higher Education 📖 If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a message!!!Link: https://lnkd.in/eRD8rkAT #university #medicine #oxbridge #outreach #stemeducation #application #ucas

Encouraging student participation in WBL is crucial, especially when it comes to hands-on and off-site opportunities like job shadows. But what happens when students don't show up? Our recent I-WIN group discussion explored various approaches to address this challenge, including: 1️⃣ Embedding job shadows in curriculum and linking to a grade: Tying the experience to academic grades not only ensures participation but also connects the job shadow directly to academic requirements by integrating them into coursework.2️⃣ Setting expectations upfront: We deliberated on the idea of establishing clear and consistent guidelines upfront including completing deadlines for prerequisites to attend. 3️⃣ Opt-out option: Many school districts shared how they use career interest surveys to recruit students for job shadows and are curious about the idea of offering students the chance to opt-out early in the process to help mitigate last-minute no-shows.While punitive measures were discussed, we felt it’s important to foster communication and understanding as students mature and may find themselves more ready and interested in engaging in a job shadow. Nonetheless, ensuring accountability remains a priority to uphold the value of these experiential learning opportunities. What strategies have you found effective in addressing student attendance for job shadows? Please share in the comments! And check out our detailed notes from the conversation here: https://lnkd.in/gMwkF6XZ
