NASCAR Cup Series race at New Hampshire: Live updates, highlights, live leaderboard of USA TODAY 301 (2024)

New Hampshire Motor Speedway hosts the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday for the USA TODAY 301.

Sunday's race could be impacted by rain, though the current National Weather Service forecast calls for lesser chances earlier in the race before increasing chances for precipitation after 4 p.m.

It's the lone trip for the Cup Series to New Hampshire this season. Chase Elliott is the pole sitter after Saturday's qualifying session was rained out.

Christopher Bell wins the USA TODAY 301

Christopher Bell was so good on restarts on the wet tires, and he does it again on the GWC restart to win the USA TODAY 301 by a full second over Chase Briscoe and Josh Berry.

Lap 298: Green-white-checkered finish

Brad Keselowski spins, and despite NASCAR waiting to put out the caution, he can't get re-fired. Caution is out.

Josh Berry closed in on Christopher Bell before the caution.

Now, the restart: Bell will take the top lane, but who will try on the inside and maybe get physical with Bell into turn 1? The top line is absolutely the preferred groove, but fenders can make an impact.

Lap 292: Green flag, and then a caution

Christopher Bell continues to lead after a good restart, and Michael McDowell spins from second into Ryan Blaney. That's a tough deal for both cars.

After several pace laps under caution, NASCAR decides to allow wet tire changes

After several laps under caution, NASCAR makes the decision to allow non-competitive stops for new wet tires.

That took too long to figure out, and the track to continues to dry out. NASCAR mandating the entire strategy for teams is not a good experience for anyone, it seems. Yes, these teams have never run wet tires on a track like this for this long, but what data does NASCAR have that can help them make a more informed decision over these teams?

Lap 283: Carson Hocevar spins

Carson Hocevar spins after slowing his pace for a couple laps. Caution is out. Several drivers are complaining about tire wear as the track dries out, though not sure the turns are dry enough.

Lap 273: Christopher Bell leads again

Christopher Bell is ahead of Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson, who lean on each other through turns 3 and 4.

Teams can now change tires in non-competitive pit stops

The field comes down pit road and changes tires under non-competitive conditions.

Lap 264: Bubba Wallace among those involved in multi-car crash

Noah Gragson spins off the apron and backs into Bubba Wallace, collecting several cars. Austin Dillon, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Austin Cindric and others either spin or collect some damage.

Wallace hit the wall pretty solidly hard and shows the lingering feeling of the impact as he walks away from his car.

Lap 263: Christopher Bell continues to lead off the restart

Christopher Bell holds off Kyle Larson and Ryan Blaney on the restart as Josh Berry pushes forward to fifth.

Lap 256: Corey Lajoie spins

Corey Lajoie spins off the apron while working through turn 1, and the caution is out. Will NASCAR allow for new tires here?

The answer is no. No tire changes allowed here.

Lap 250: Christopher Bell has a big lead over Ryan Blaney

Christopher Bell has a 3-second lead over Ryan Blaney, though Blaney is starting to run faster.

Chase Briscoe is up to eighth, while Denny Hamlin is down to 14th as the drivers continue to get used to the wet tires.

Lap 242: Christopher bell to the lead

Christopher Bell takes the lead on the restart and is pulling away.

Both Front Row Motorsports cars are inside the top 10, an impressive day so far.

NASCAR won't allow teams to change tires

NASCAR is not allowing teams to change tires, either to slicks or to a new set of wet-weather tires. That is a major flaw in this process. These teams can make their own decisions here.

A few cars initially came down pit road and changed to a new set of wet-weather tires, and NASCAR instructed those cars to return to pit road and put the original set back on. NASCAR is using questionable logic at best here.

Lap 235: Ross Chastain spins

Caution is out after Ross Chastain spins off of turn 4. Chastain tried to re-correct after getting loose into the corner but eventually turned it around.

Tyler Reddick leads Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson.

Lap 234: Josh Berry, Chase Elliott drive into top 10

Josh Berry is up to eighth place while Chase Elliott is in 10th. Those two drivers re-started 20th and 21st, respectively.

Lap 230: Tyler Reddick continues to lead

Tyler Reddick continues to lead as Christopher Bell surges to second by running near the wall. There are about six usable grooves in the turns, including the apron. All clean for now.

Lap 229: Green flag!

The cars are two-by-two, and the green flag is out with 73 laps to go. This should be very interesting.

Kyle Busch done for the day after hitting the wall under caution

Kyle Busch hits the wall pretty hard in turns 3 and 4, and his day is done. Wow.

The No. 8 team tells NBC that they were unsure about the issue that caused Busch to hit the wall.

Red flag is over as cars get into order

The cars are moving into order down the backstretch as the red flag period is over. A reminder: Tyler Reddick leads Ryan Blaney, Denny Hamlin, Todd Gilliland and Justin Haley.

The red flag period lasted two hours and 14 minutes.

NASCAR allowed teams to re-fuel as well. How long will it take for the track to dry once the race goes green? And how long will they have enough daylight to continue?

Engines will be re-fired soon

Engines will be re-fired at about 5:43 p.m. CT, per NASCAR. The cars will start on wet-weather tires.

NASCAR preparing track as teams put wet weather tires on cars

NASCAR is trying to get the race track prepared for racing with wet-weather tires. NASCAR has instructed teams to put on those wet weather tires, and it appears a resumption is upcoming sometime soon.

Now a lightning hold

There is now a lightning hold, with lightning detected near New Hampshire Motor Speedway. How much longer will NASCAR wait before calling the race?

Lap 219: Red flag

Rain has halted the USA TODAY 301 with 82 laps to go. The red flag is out as the rain picks up, with Tyler Reddick in the lead.

Kyle Busch spins down the backstretch just as Tyler Reddick holds off Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney to hold the lead.

Rain is being reported around the track in New Hampshire.

Lap 209: Martin Truex Jr. wrecks

Martin Truex Jr., toward the back of the field because of a poor pit stop, tries to shoot between two cars coming off of turn 4 but can't fit through and spins off contact. He backs it into the frontstretch wall.

Lap 200: Tyler Reddick, Kyle Larson battle for the lead as Corey Lajoie spins

Tyler Reddick and Kyle Larson are battling for the lead as Corey Lajoie spins off of contact from Ryan Preece. Lajoie may have squeezed Preece into the wall, and two cars cannot fit into one lane.

Reddick is the leader, per NASCAR.

Lap 195: Chase Elliott, Joey Logano spin

Chase Elliott and joey Logano make contact, and Elliott is around. Both cars have pretty significant damage, with Logano locking up head into the first turn on the restart. Nothing Elliott could do there.

Kyle Busch and Noah Gragson make contact going into turn 1 and both spin. It appears Busch, in the bottom lane, slid up the track a bit before the two cars made contact.

Busch has some rear-end damage.

Lap 151: Race is past halfway

The USA TODAY 301 is past halfway, so the race will be official today. Denny Hamlin leads Joey Logano after they stay out. Most leaders took two tires, including Christopher Bell and Martin Truex Jr.

Daniel Hemric spins off of turn 2 for the first non-stage break caution of the day.

Alex Bowman comes down pit road with smoke coming out of the tailpipes, and his crew has the hood up.

Lap 111: Martin Truex Jr. closes in on Christopher Bell

Martin Truex Jr. had cut Christopher Bell's lead to 1.1 seconds, but it increases again as Bell approaches lap traffic.

Lap 95: Martin Truex Jr. to second

Martin Truex Jr. moves around Josh Berry for second place. He has been very good at this track, including a win at New Hampshire last year.

Lap 79: Christopher Bell leads off the restart

Christopher Bell holds the lead on the restart to start the second stage. Chase Elliott restarts fifth, and that's where the action is as Josh Berry, Martin Truex Jr., Joey Logano and Elliott spread out through the turns.

Josh Berry is up to fourth after passing Ross Chastain and Ryan Blaney. He has good speed off the corner early.

Chase Elliott's lead after five laps is 2.1 seconds over Christopher Bell and Ross Chastain. He is flying at the start of the USA TODAY 301.
