I got the update to macOS Sonoma 14.6.1 (23G93)
and
Safari Version 17.6 (19618.3.11.11.5)
last night - not auto installed because Terminal won't quit while my ping script is running.
This is on a 2018 Intel MacBook Air.
I finished the install this morning and noted since then
- NO Time Machine backups until I rebooted the machine. After the reboot it took a LONG time to mount my backup partition. Several minutes after the other partition on that drive. Time Machine now works.
- Safari locked up twice while having a bunch of windows open. High speed fan use too. Used Force Quit both times.
- I tried Safari a third time, never started (saw the bouncing animation for a couple minutes and then it stopped).
- Reboot after that third try of Safari failed. It got stuck on a screen showing the background only (no windows). I had to use the manual power off / on to bring it back up.
Is anyone else having these kinds of problems?
I submitted Reports to Apple - perhaps they have the information needed to help diagnose the problems.
Not happy.
MacBook Air 13″, macOS 14.6

I don't usually post on technical issue forums as I'm not like, a power user or anything but a stereotypical consumer level research student. My Macbook Pro 13 2020 M1 w/ 8GB, just updated to Sonoma 14.6.1 and it's the worst.
My workflow tools are not working (Notion Calendar, Magnet) and my extremely reliable Brother HL1210W printer isn't connecting at all with USB or IP. It's literally ruined my week and this is the first time I've ever encountered unreliability from my Mac which is the reason I switched from PC in the first place.

I have a MacBook Pro 2018 intel. After updating to Sonoma 14.6.1 I can no longer record or bounce files in pro tools and I keep getting disk permissions error 69841 when I try to repair or reset disk utility permissions. Right now it says my Mac HD is read only and I do not have permission to change it.

My problem is while editing in FinalCutPro 10.8.1 for playback on my 2021 MacBook Pro in a live performance tomorrow, suddenly, "Music" starts randomly playing a track. This would be a disaster if I'm playing live out of FCP in a performance. I've created an mp3 track of 4 hours of silence and imported it into Music so that's what it will play if it misbehaves "on the night". This occurred for the first time within an hour of downloading Sonoma 14.6.1
As time goes on, my enthusiasm for Apple as a company continues to nose-dive. Updates cannot be trusted. New machines don't live up to their sales pitch. Whatever happened to Apple? Are they trying to get rid of us?

my mac freezes in black screen with cursor for several seconds every time i open the screen. before the update, it instantly show the screen or even the browser you left before closing the lid. now it freezes black but i can see that it is open because the audio is playing when you're on the browser but the screen is black about 5 to 10secs. then after the screen shows when on log in, the finger print and the keyboard is unresponsive for another while before you can type, before, it instantly unlocks after you put the finger print.. I've tried several methods, shutdown, safemode, erase memory but stil it freezes. is there anyone who have experience the same issue?
also it took longer to boot

Same behaviour here, Macbook Pro 14 2023, Apple M2 Max w/ 32 GB. System at macOS Sonoma 14.6.1 with the update applied yesterday night.
OS takes ages to load and when it does, there is a gray background and everything is so slow, including the spinning wheel constantly and error windows every time. Opening a terminal just don't work (seems like loading the command line) and all others apps fail to open.
Tried to load in safe mode and everything seems to be working back (in safe mode), but when doing a regular restart, it fails again.

Do you have Crowdstrike Falcon installed?
If so, there's the problem.

I just reinstall my Mac. Everything was OK, but only thing you can’t use internet at all in any application.
I tried many things like disable vpn, forgot that wi-fi and I try it connect it with Ethernet cable and also didn’t work.
Now I am trying to completely reinstall and I hope it’ll work fine.

+1 from me. Updated my 2019 3.6ghz i9 64gig system to 14.6.1 a few days ago, performance has become absolute garbage with frequent hangs from any app, whether using disk or not. Full reboot login takes about ten minutes. Similar to OP, until I found this thread, I'd heard the normal grinding away of Time Machine to my 9tb spinning disk target and assumed things were fine, only to realize I've also had no successful backup since 14.6.1 went on.
After the most recent reboot, apfsd was consuming 100% cpu for several hours, that's subsided and now it's on to mdsync. I do have an external (Thunderbolt 2 to USB-C adapter) raid array, 9tb with 5tb in use, which presents as a single drive to the Mac, and the internal fusion drive. Perhaps 14.6+ has:
- changed something related to APFS, its journals, etc. that must complete before Time Machine can begin functioning again.
- whatever that is also dramatically impacts disk performance until it's done.
- maybe that process can take several days to a week or more? I don't feel like I have an excessive amount of data or files; my inode count on the external volume is ~500k files, although on the internal /System/Volumes/Data it's a ridiculous 42M, which I hope relates to snapshots because I don't even use the internal drive for anything but apps and the files they keep in my home directory for preferences, etc.
Either way, the computer is barely usable right now. I updated my wife's computer at the same time, it seemed fine afterward, but today, same day as my problems got dramatically worse, it lost the ability to obtain a DHCP address even though tcpdump showed packets coming in on the network adapter that was supposedly not working. I added a USB dongle ethernet device and it magically fixes the issue.
Just some really questionable stuff going on with this release. The fact that we both had an issue on the same day makes me wonder if Apple pushed out one of those behind the scenes zero day patches that MacOS will grab even if not set to auto update.

MacBook Air 2020 Intel, the laptop got same issue with very slow login after being shut down.
Other issues just appeared on my Mac after updating this OS:
- Don't plug in to charge but the laptop shows plug symbol. Charging cables work fine, already checked with iPad. Need to reboot to clear that plug icon but happens again whenever I plug in and still shows plug symbol when I already plug it off.
- I shut down my Mac or restarted it normally not because of being frozen but whenever it's on after being shut down or restarted it shows the usual error message "your laptop was shut down due to a problem..."
Photo below shows how weird it is when it shows plug symbol while I don't plug it in at all!

Same issue here but Apple support not acknowledging the issue. I have done a clean OS install, ran Time Machine to reinstate and it worked fine... for ONE day ! Cannot use the MacBook as every thing you try to open crashes Finder, Cannot move files either.
Need URGENT fix!

Same here with my Macbook pro 2019
My battery life has gone from a day and a half to about 3 hours! The laptop runs very hot and neither Safari or Fire fox is loading properly.
It crashes at least 3 times a day.
Come on Apple, sort it out!

After updating the Sonoma 14.6.1, my MacBook Pro cannot detect any of my Apples devices including my iPad and iPhone that I plugg in. Besides, my Blu-ray/DVD device cannot be detected as well. It’s horrible! Is there anyone who can teach me how to fix this problem? Many thanks.

Oh, Somona.
I have an iMac, intel processor, 3TB Fusion Drive, late 2019 (£4K). Upgraded to Somona at behest of Apple. Not great, very sticky especially when accessing portable drives, but just about working. Then update 14.6.1 loaded. Disaster. Locked me out of system. Then wouldn’t reboot. Went into Recovery mode. Disk utility said no hardware issues. Apple advised erase system and start again. So I did. Then it happened again. So I erased system again, tried to load Somona via but now all contact with internet now being blocked. Week on phone to Apple. Managed to get back online after another system wipe + NVRAM reset….then it happened again. So after 2 weeks into Apple Store. Health check. No hardware issues. No viruses etc. So iMac now requires a deep dive health check. Only now they said some damage has been caused to Fusion Drive overheating (!) It is suggested this has been caused by the new OS. So they offer to replace 3TB Fusion Drive, only it’s no longer made (Apple now insisting my computer is a ‘vintage model’, despite being bought in late 2019, and therefore no longer supported). But they sense they’ve caused this issue so do their best to resolve it. So I agree to the hard drive switch, as the alternative is an offer of a £250 buy back / exchange on a £4K iMac that was working just fine on Ventura, and then buying a new iMac. So now I’m 2TB down, and up and running again on Ventura, and nothing on Earth will get me near Somona again (I have seen posts that suggest Sonoma has major issues if you have an intel processor…no idea if that is true, but lived experience tells me Somona has been a very expensive disaster for me).
Apple have been very helpful throughout, but I realised what the OS team do is kept very distant from the team on the front line trying to fix these issues - which ultimately wrecked my Fusion Drive and nearly my iMac.
