History of the rum co*cktail

Nowadays, there are countless variations of rum co*cktails. The first mention of a co*cktail dates back to 1806, although the alcohol used was not specified here, only a spirit was mentioned. It can be assumed that the first rum co*cktails were made on the Caribbean island to which the origins of rum are attributed - Barbados. Wherever rum was mixed with water and fruit juices, a popular refreshing drink was created. The first beginnings can be found in the Caribbean, where rum was produced and mixed with water and fruit juices to become a popular soft drink. The Daiquiri became known by name in the late 19th century as a rum co*cktail in Cuba. It originally consisted of rum, lime juice and sugar! It quickly became a favourite drink worldwide. The Mojito also comes from Cuba, to which mint and soda are added to the rum, lime juice and sugar.

After the tiki bars became popular in the 1940s, more and more rum co*cktails came into fashion and enjoyed particular popularity. In the Tiki era, which began in the 1940s and waned again in the early 1970s, everything to do with the South Seas was popular! In addition to fashion, art, everyday objects, home accessories and architecture, the bar scene was also involved, and with it co*cktails.

Californian Victor Jules Bergeron, nicknamed Vic, founded the famous Trader Vic's, a Polynesian restaurant and tiki bar chain.

Many co*cktails have their origins in Cuba and the Tiki era.

In many rum-producing countries, co*cktails, or rather drinks, are mixed freely and are then simply called "punch".

The Ti Punch from Martinique isprobablynot listed in any co*cktail book in the world, but is widely drunk on the island. The name comes from Petit Punch, which means small punch! It is drunk throughout the day.

They jokingly say: "Chacun prépare sa propre mort." - "Everyone prepares their own death."

And it's so quick and easy to mix:

  • 4 cl white rhum agricole
  • 1 tsp cane sugar
  • Infused with freshly squeezed lime juice

The "Punch" on the island of Madeira at William Hinton Rum is simple and versatile at the same time. It is available traditionally, regionally with orange, as a "pescador" with lemon or newly created with passion fruit or ginger.

Basic equipment for your home bar

Rum, rum and... rum

Which rum is best for co*cktails?

Firstly: white rum and brown rum are equally suitable for rum co*cktails. White rum is often lighter and fresher, while brown rum has more character of its own as it has been stored in a barrel. A lot depends on individual taste.

If you now have a high-proof rum and a rum agricole in your home bar, you can create a delicious co*cktail at any time! Incidentally, a rum agricole can also be enjoyed on its own.

We have compiled the best rums for various occasions on a special page.

Other ingredients

Juices from various tropical fruits are a must in your household. With orange, pineapple and lemon juice, you can get even closer to a rum co*cktail. Add coconut juice or syrup, orange liqueur, grenadine and sugar syrup.

You should always have fresh, unprocessed lemons, limes and cane sugar in the house - and a sufficient supply of ice cubes.

Garnish and serve your co*cktail attractively

co*cktail bowls, long drink glasses or tumblers are suitable for serving a rum co*cktail in an attractive way. Depending on the co*cktail, lemon, orange or pineapple slices look great on the rim of the glass as a garnish. There are no limits to your imagination here!

Other accessories

To start mixing, you will need a co*cktail shaker, a bar measure and a lemon squeezer. Other useful accessories include a blender, a bar strainer, a zest cutter and a bar spoon.

Mojito

Toast to the world-famous writer!

Five ingredients - one delicious summer drink! This refreshing co*cktail originates from Cuba and the writer Hemingway was probably its most famous fan. There is no consensus as to where the name Mojito comes from. Whether it's the name of a cloth bag, a mixture of spices or the term for "wet" - it doesn't matter, the long drink has fans all over the world.

Ingredients:

  • 5 cl white rum
  • 2.5 cl freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 2 cl sugar syrup or cane sugar
  • Soda water for topping up
  • 2 stalks of mint

Preparation:

Place the lime juice, cane sugar and a few mint leaves in a glass and crush with a pestle to extract the flavours. Then add ice, add the rum and top up with soda. Garnish with mint leaves.

The white rum should be of good quality - the finer the co*cktail!

Pina Colada

The liquid rum dessert!
The sweetest thing a rum co*cktail has to offer! It enchants us like a dessert! The Piña Colada comes from Puerto Rico and its ingredients make it creamy, sweet and fruity at the same time.

There are many variations of a piña colada, but it always includes: Rum, pineapple juice and coconut milk. White rum makes the co*cktail fresh, brown rum gives it a strong flavour.

Planter's Punch

The summer co*cktail - known the world over - variable in style!

The Planter's Punch also dates back to the Tiki era. It is one of the most famous rum co*cktails in the world. Its name still contains the word "punch", which was the co*cktail's predecessor. There are a number of variations, which always consist of rum and a combination of different juices. The fruity rum co*cktail par excellence!

Ingredients:

  • 6 cl brown rum
  • 4 cl orange juice
  • 4 cl pineapple juice
  • 2 cl lemon or lime juice
  • 1 cl grenadine
  • 2 cl sugar syrup

Preparation:

Shake the rum and juice vigorously over ice in a co*cktail shaker. Strain into a glass filled with ice cubes and then carefully pour over the grenadine for a nice colour gradient. Garnish with an orange peel.

Rum Sour

Sour and creamy at the same time, that's the classic!

The ingredients rum, lemon and sugar are classic. What makes it special is the egg white, which is less responsible for the flavour and more for the creamy consistency.

Ingredients:

  • 4.5 cl brown rum
  • 3 cl freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1.5 cl sugar syrup
  • 1.5 cl egg white

Preparation:

Shake all the ingredients together thoroughly in a shaker over ice, although the egg white can also be omitted. Shaking is particularly important when adding egg white. Fill a glass with ice cubes and strain the co*cktail over them.

Use the zest of an organic lemon to garnish the drink. You can also leave out the egg white. In addition to Rum Sour, there are also Whiskey Sour and Gin Sour.

Zoombie

Also a tiki co*cktail! It is strong and is mixed with different types of rum, white, brown and high-proof rum.

  • 2 cl high-proof rum
  • 4 cl orange juice
  • 4 cl lime juice
  • 2 cl orange liqueur

Preparation:

Shake all the ingredients in a shaker with ice cubes and then strain into a glass with crushed ice. A lemon zest goes well as a garnish.

An elaborate creation that is said to bring the dead back to life! A little pineapple juice can be added to give the co*cktail an extra fresh flavour.
